Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana (BBBS SWLA) is proud to announce a new partnership with the Cameron Parish School District to bring both Group Mentoring and High School Mentoring programs to students across Cameron Parish. The collaboration will provide meaningful mentorship opportunities designed to help students build confidence, strengthen relationships, and develop valuable leadership skills.
Beginning this fall, BBBS SWLA will launch programming at multiple Cameron Parish schools, including:
- Hackberry High School – Group Mentoring program serving approximately 9 students
- Grand Lake High School – High School Mentoring program with approximately 5 matches, impacting 10 students
- South Cameron High School – High School Mentoring program with approximately 5 matches, impacting 10 students
- Johnson Bayou High School – Proposed High School Mentoring program with approximately 5 matches, impacting 10 students, pending final confirmation
BBBS SWLA staff are currently working closely with school administrators, students, and families to complete enrollment and screening processes. Mentoring sessions are expected to begin in mid-November.
Through the High School Mentoring model, older student mentors will provide supervised, one-to-one mentorship to younger students, fostering positive connections and creating opportunities for both mentors and mentees to grow. In addition, BBBS SWLA staff will lead group mentoring sessions focused on social-emotional development, communication, decision-making, and healthy relationship skills.
"We are excited to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters to expand the ways our students can learn, connect, and grow," said Frankie Reed, Social & Emotional Learning Coordinator for the Cameron Parish School District. "Through Big Brothers Big Sisters, our high school students will have the opportunity to provide supervised mentorship to our younger students. The Big Brothers Big Sisters staff will also work directly with middle school students to strengthen skills that support healthy relationships, communication, and decision-making. I think this partnership creates opportunities for students to learn from one another, develop leadership skills, and build connections that can positively influence their experiences both in and outside of school."
The partnership reflects both organizations' commitment to supporting the whole student by creating environments where young people feel connected, encouraged, and empowered. Research consistently shows that mentorship can have a lasting impact on a young person's academic success, self-esteem, and future aspirations.
"This partnership is an exciting step forward in expanding access to meaningful mentorship for students in Cameron Parish,” said Jillian Cormier, MBA, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana. “By bringing mentoring opportunities directly into schools, we can help more young people build confidence, strengthen essential life skills, and see new possibilities for their futures. We are grateful to the Cameron Parish School District for sharing our commitment to helping young people reach their full potential."
As BBBS SWLA continues to grow throughout Southwest Louisiana, the organization remains focused on its mission of creating and supporting one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.
