Nov 20, 2023 10:57AM ● By Jessica WaldropSunday, the Carter Center announced the passing of former first lady, Rosalynn Carter at the age of 96. She passed peacefully surrounded by her family at the family's home in Plains, Georgia after a diagnosis of dementia and being admitted to home hospice care.
Former President, Jimmy Carter said in a statement: "Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me."
The Carter's worked together unlike any of their previous presidents and first lady duos. While other first ladies may have privately advised their husbands, first lady Carter spoke her mind to her husband, and he valued her advice.
"Jimmy Carter has always taught me you do the best you can and you don't worry about the criticism," she told CBS News' Bob Schieffer in October 1980. "It does not matter what you do. It does not matter. I could stay here and pour tea and be a hostess and do nothing else and I would be criticized, or I could have one project — it doesn't matter what I do, it doesn't matter what he does — we're going to be criticized. You just have to have confidence."
