McNeese Summer Engineering Research Academy

McNeese State University will host the Summer Engineering Research Academy July 6–10, 2026, offering high school students entering grades 9–12 an opportunity to explore engineering, data science, and technology through hands-on projects and faculty-led instruction. Held on the McNeese campus in Lake Charles, the Academy provides students with an immersive learning experience using university laboratories and equipment while working alongside McNeese engineering faculty. Throughout the week, students will gain experience in: • Concrete mix design and testing using real engineering laboratory equipment • Civil engineering concepts related to roads, bridges, and infrastructure • Python programming and data analysis • Scientific graphing and data visualization • High-altitude atmospheric research using real NASA balloon data • Engineering problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork During the morning session, students will participate in Concrete Mix Design & Testing, where they will design and mix their own concrete, test its strength, and learn how civil engineers develop materials used in roads, bridges, and other structures. During the afternoon session, students will participate in Skyward Science: High-Altitude Balloon Data & Python, where they will use Python to analyze real NASA balloon data, investigate temperature and humidity at high altitudes, create scientific visualizations, and think like data scientists and atmospheric researchers. Registration is $500 per student. A limited-time tuition subsidy is currently available, reducing the cost to $400 per student while funding lasts. Registration includes all instructional materials, laboratory supplies, daily lunch in the McNeese Student Union, and a Certificate of Achievement upon successful completion of the Academy.
