Stay Safe on Ladders and Outdoor Power Equipment

Aug 21, 2026 04:12PM ● By Kelsey Swire

As residents tackle routine home maintenance, landscaping, and other outdoor work, Acadian Ambulance is reminding the public to prioritize basic precautions around power equipment and ladders.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimated 273,000 people were treated in emergency departments for injuries involving ladders and stools in 2024.

Taking a few extra minutes to prepare before starting a project can help reduce the risk of falls, cuts, burns, and other injuries. When using lawn and outdoor power equipment, Acadian Ambulance recommends:

  • Inspect equipment before each use.

  • Clear the work area of rocks, sticks, toys, and other debris.

  • Wear proper protective gear, including closed-toe shoes and eye protection.

  • Keep children and pets away from operating equipment.

  • Turn equipment off before clearing jams or making adjustments.

  • Allow equipment to cool before refueling.

For ladder safety:

  • Inspect the ladder for damage before use.

  • Place it on firm, level ground.

  • Use the right ladder for the job and weight.

  • Maintain three points of contact while climbing.

  • Avoid overreaching and reposition the ladder instead.

  • Keep ladders away from power lines.

Acadian Ambulance also encourages residents to take breaks, stay hydrated, and avoid outdoor work during periods of extreme heat when possible. If a serious injury occurs, call 911.
