The national college review website WalletHub has ranked SOWELA Technical Community College as the #1 community college in Louisiana. This marks the ninth year in a row that SOWELA has been recognized as the top community college in the state, reinforcing its leadership in affordability, student outcomes and career success. WalletHub’s rankings are based on cost and financing, education outcomes and career outcomes.

“The distinction of being rated the #1 community college in Louisiana for nine straight years is something the College has worked hard to achieve,” said SOWELA Chancellor Dr. Neil Aspinwall. “SOWELA is extremely student focused and the faculty and staff work tirelessly to ensure that our students are provided the utmost quality in instructional programming and student services so upon completion of their programs of study, the students are prepared for the high skill and high-wage jobs available in our region. I am extremely proud of the reputation SOWELA has created as a strong workforce provider for our business and industry partners and an economic engine for the SWLA region.”

SOWELA also exceeded its 2025/2026 completer goal, awarding 2,854 credentials—146 above its target of 2,708—achieving 105.39% of its goal. This milestone supports the Louisiana Community and Technical College’s (LCTC) initiative, “Reaching Equitable Prosperity by 2030.”

These achievements reflect SOWELA’s student-first approach, strong support services, 11 years without an increase in tuition or fees, and programs aligned with regional workforce demand.
Recent data shows SOWELA graduates rank first in the region and third statewide for median earnings, demonstrating strong return on investment and reinforcing the College’s role as a key economic driver.

SOWELA offers over 30 programs and 60-plus industry-based credentials including drafting and design, industrial mechanics, chemical laboratory, business administration, surgical technology, nursing, accounting, HVAC and commercial driver’s license (CDL) training.
