LAKE CHARLES WEATHER

A little birdie told us you should read this!

What started as a lightbulb moment over Easter weekend has suddenly turned into something far bigger than anyone expected.

Just six weeks ago, a completely unknown author sat down with no publisher, no literary agent, and no experience writing children’s books; she only had a laptop and a story that had quietly lived inside her for years.

That story became 'The Patchwork Raven' by Raven N. Fairbanks.

Inspired by her own experiences growing up feeling different and misunderstood, Fairbanks wrote the book as a reminder to children that the very things that make them feel different may actually be the things that make them special.

In less than 48 hours of it's release, the self-published children’s book climbed to the top spot for New Releases in multiple Christian children’s categories and briefly broke into the top 26,000 in rankings amongst approximately 50 million titles on Amazon. Now, correct us if we are wrong, but doesn't that mean it landed in the top 1%?

For Fairbanks, the response has felt surreal.

The Patchwork Raven follows a young raven who struggles with feeling out of place in the world around her. Over time, she begins to discover that the qualities she once worried made her different were actually part of the beauty God created within her all along.

While written for preschool through approximately third grade, early pre-launch readers say the story’s message resonates just as deeply with adults.

Beyond the story itself, the book also includes vocabulary words and guided discussion questions designed to help parents and children talk about emotions, confidence, bullying, kindness, loneliness, and self-worth.

Fairbanks says one of the most unexpected parts of the experience has been realizing how many people have their own story, idea, or dream they have been too afraid to pursue.

She hopes the launch of 'The Patchwork Raven' encourages others to stop waiting for permission to try something new. She added, “This book is not perfect. There are a million things about it I could pick apart; but if I had waited until everything felt perfect, a physical copy would have never existed. So, I submitted it. It’s complete and it's mine. I created it while having absolutely no idea what I was doing and somehow that makes me even more proud of it.  ”
