As hunting season is underway, Acadian Ambulance is reminding hunters and the outdoor community to stay alert and make safety a top priority. A few simple precautions from the Air Force Safety Center can help prevent serious accidents.
General Safety Reminders
Take a state-certified hunter education course.
Follow the four basic firearm-safety rules:
Treat every gun as if it’s loaded.
Never point the muzzle at anything you don’t intend to shoot.
Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
Always be sure of your target and what’s beyond it.
Wear blaze-orange or other highly visible clothing so other hunters can see you.
Check the weather and tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
Carry a first-aid kit and dry clothes.
If Using a Tree Stand
Always use a full-body safety harness.
Inspect the stand and gear before climbing. Practice harness procedures on the ground if possible.
When climbing, keep three points of contact (two hands and one foot, or vice versa).
Never carry firearms or arrows while climbing, use a haul line instead.
For Non-Hunters and Other Outdoor Users
Know when and where hunting is allowed before you hike or walk.
Wear bright clothes, keep pets visible, and make noise (talk, whistle, etc.) to alert hunters to your presence.
Staying aware and following basic safety tips keeps everyone protected during hunting season.
