Big Game for Big Easy

A year that began tragically for the City of New Orleans, then descended into a deep freeze, is about to have the biggest of spotlights shine on it.

And if ever there was a city that needs a quick turnaround, New Orleans is once again the place.

After having to watch the Saints last fall, pro football’s best will put on the ultimate show in Louisiana’s party capital.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs will play in this year’s Super Bowl inside the Superdome. The game and week leading up to it will give New Orleans a great chance to heal at least some of its wounds.

In the very early hours of 2025, a man drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street. He then exited the truck and engaged police in a gunfight.

Fifteen people were killed, including the driver and 57 others were injured. That number included two police officers.

The attack ruined New Year's celebrations and postponed the Sugar Bowl for a day. It was New Orleans's latest punch to the gut.

Three weeks later, a rare winter storm dumped almost a full foot of snow on the Big Easy, which for a moment at least put a smile back on the folk's faces. Now comes the party before the party, as the Super Bowl will be a prelude to Mardi Gras.

To most fans, the Super Bowl is just a football game, but for a city, it can be a huge financial win. New Orleans needs a victory.

The eyes of the country will be on New Orleans for a good reason this time. It is a perfect way to put on a winning show, giving those to at least consider the city in a different light. And it can bring future games and events to town.

New Orleans is no rookie when it comes to hosting the big game. This will be the 11th time the Super Bowl has come to NOLA, equaling Miami as the top host for the NFL.

Safety will be a huge topic of conversation leading up to the week. Then, the big names will take over.

The game itself has huge stars surrounding it, on and off the field. For every Patrick Mahomes, there is some celebrity who will make sure their presence in town is noticed.

And yes, Taylor Swift is expected to be on hand to cheer her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce on as he and his teammates try to become the first franchise in history to win three straight Super Bowls.

The Eagles also have their own set of stars, from quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley to the league’s best defense. Sorry, no Taylor Swift on their side of the luxury boxes, but plenty of big-name fans call Philly home.

While most fans likely wanted other teams in this game, we got two franchises with great history and talent. That should overtake any Chiefs’ fatigue among the public.

But this is one of those sporting events where the game is secondary to the event. The event, or events scattered throughout the area, will give New Orleans a chance to showcase itself.

And wipe away some tears.
