Justin Thomas looks to defend PGA Championship title at Oak Hill

Although the day started off with a frost delay, the 2023 PGA Championship is set to take place at the esteemed Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, New York. This historic venue, known for its challenging layout and rich golfing heritage, will once again play host to the world’s top golfers as they vie for the prestigious Wanamaker Trophy. Defending champion Justin Thomas begins his bid for a third PGA championship a little after 10 a.m. EDT. Thomas is playing with two-time PGA champion Rory McIlroy and 2020 PGA champion Collin Morikawa.
Oak Hill Country Club, established in 1901 and designed by the legendary Donald Ross, has seen some of the most memorable moments in golf history. Its tight fairways, strategically placed hazards, and undulating greens have consistently tested the skills of players across generations, making Oak Hill a worthy setting for major championships. The championship layout demands accuracy off the tee to navigate narrow fairways, while approach shots must contend with well-guarded greens that punish errant shots. Oak Hill’s rough and treacherous bunkers add an additional layer of challenge, requiring precise shot-making and course management. The par-4 14th hole, known as “Fairy Knowe,” features a demanding tee shot that must navigate a tree-lined fairway before players face a challenging approach shot to an elevated green. The par-3 15th hole, named “Briar Patch,” demands an accurate tee shot over a deep valley to a well-protected green, where missing the target can result in a difficult recovery.
